ACC Football Preview 2013
Here is a brief preview of my article, but check out my full ACC College Football Preview & Odds 2013 article for the other top teams in this conference.
(Florida State +250)
FSU has improved in all three years under Jimbo Fisher, but now they have some turnover on the roster and coaching staff to overcome, but they will have the foundation on offense with 4 of the 5 offensive linemen returning for a young QB. In total the offense has 9 and the defense has 7 returning from last year’s squad and is the reason why they are +250 to win the ACC Conference Championship.
Things To Know On Offense:
With EJ Manuel gone it’s hard to see this offense improving despite returning 9 of their 11 starters, but red shirt freshmen Jameis Winston is the successor and there is a lot of hype. Winston will have junior WR Rashad Greene and TE Nick O’Leary to throw to and is backed by a solid running game behind the most physical offensive line in the ACC.
Things To Know On Defense:
Jeremy Pruitt comes over from Alabama where he was the secondary coach for 3 years and will take over for Mark Stoops who took over at Kentucky and will inherit one of the country’s most talented defenses as far as depth is concerned. They return 7 starters, but they have a ton of depth and have an ability to stop the run and the pass led by senior Lamarcus Joyner who should become a top 10 pick under Pruitt.
(North Carolina +800)
Finally the Tar Heels are post season eligible and following an 8-4 under Larry Fedora there is a lot of excitement around the team.
Things To Know On Offense: They will return senior QB Bryn Renner who threw for 3,356 yards 28 TD’s and just 7 INT’s. Fedora will keep his up-tempo, no-huddle spread offense that worked well a year ago, but they’ll have to do it behind a rebuilt offensive line. They also lose RB Giovani Bernard along with the three offensive linemen that he ran behind. This unit ranked 8th in the country in scoring, but that number is not likely to improve with these changes.
Things To Know On Defense: This unit lacks edge pressure and has a lot of weaknesses up the middle at linebacker. Teams that want to run should be able to against the unique 4-2-5 defensive scheme. However, the secondary is a real strength and they are strong at tackles which could lead to good red-zone defense and some takeaways.
(Virginia Tech +800) Frank Beamer is back for his 28th year, but he’s got to rebound from a terrible season that started with high hopes and ended with a dreadful 7-6 finish.
Things To Know On Offense: Logan Thomas is back for his senior season at QB after a very disappointing and inconsistent year. However, Scott Loeffer takes over as the offensive coordinator and should have a huge impact on Logan Thomas season. It’s not all on Thomas though as the offensive line has to do a better job protecting. Loeffer will look to spread out the attack, but it will be a reach challenge because they lack proven skill players. I expect another similar season this year with a little improvement.
Things To Know On Defense: Bud Foster’s defense is fine as it always is, but the offense constantly put them in bad positions. The defense is stacked again in 2013 with 9 starters returning, 5 of which were at least honorable mention in the ACC. Each level has talent and experience and should keep this team in a lot of low scoring games.
Here is a look at the other 9 ACC teams and their odds to win the ACC championship. Just because we are not breaking them down does not mean we won’t be looking at each one of these teams in great details for our college football picks.
